Split ends are a familiar frustration for anyone working towards healthy hair. Long or short, curly or straight: sooner or later almost everyone has to deal with them.

Once you understand how split ends develop, you can prevent and treat them far more effectively. This article explains what happens inside the hair fibre and which steps protect your hair.

01 What exactly are split ends?

Split ends, known in technical terms as trichoptilosis, develop when the protective outer layer of the hair fibre, the cuticle, is damaged or worn away. The inner core of the hair, the cortex, is then exposed and loses moisture easily, causing strands to split and fray. The main causes: frequent use of hot styling tools, aggressive chemical treatments such as bleaching and perming, environmental stress from UV rays, wind and pollution, and rough or excessive brushing, especially on wet hair.

02 Trim on a regular schedule

Once an end has split, it cannot be repaired; you can only stop the split from travelling further up the strand. Schedule a trim every six to eight weeks so damaged ends are removed before they harm the hair shaft any further. Combine this with the Healing ColorCare Trauma Treatment: this leave-in conditioner strengthens and protects the hair fibre, giving new split ends less of a chance and leaving hair looking and feeling healthier.

03 Reduce heat styling and always use protection

Hot styling tools draw moisture out of the hair and weaken the cuticle, making ends split faster. Use your flat iron, curling wand or blow-dryer in moderation, and never without heat protection. The Healing Style Thermal Defense Spray wraps each strand in a protective layer before the heat does its work, while adding flexible hold for styling. Spray it evenly through the hair and comb through for consistent coverage.

04 Choose gentle hair accessories

Tight elastics with metal parts and rough accessories create friction and breakage, precisely where your hair is already vulnerable. Choose gentle alternatives instead, such as spiral hair ties, silk or satin scrunchies and clips without sharp edges. Also vary the position of your ponytail or bun regularly, so the tension is not always on the same section of hair. Small adjustments that prevent a lot of breakage in the long run.

05 Shield your hair from sun and environment

UV rays, wind and pollution gradually weaken the cuticle, leaving hair more vulnerable to damage and split ends. Wear a hat or cap outdoors and use a product with UV protection. L'ANZA's Keratin Healing Oil Hair Treatment combines that protection with nourishing, strengthening care: the lightweight oil shields hair from sun and environmental stress while adding shine and softness. A few drops a day are enough.
